Learn At Home From The Experts!

Sheep Husbandry

sheep_cover1_angledAn inspirational teacher can make a subject come alive, and leave the student with a passion for their subject.  That’s precisely what we set out to achieve with The Smallholder Series DVDs – to give everyone the opportunity to learn from and be inspired by some of the best specialist vets, experts and practitioners in animal health and husbandry.

Our first series, “Sheep on Your Smallholding” is presented by Adam Henson, who questions the experts on all aspects of managing a healthy and productive flock, and helps out in the practical husbandry demonstrations.

Adam-and-Lesley2The process of making the series has revolutionised our own approach to managing our small flock of Hampshire Down sheep in several ways.  For example, we learned from expert Lesley Stubbings how to tackle the complex subject of internal parasites and how to avoid resistance developing against the chemicals used to treat sheep.  Specialist sheep vet Agnes Winter has helped us lessen the incidence of lameness by explaining each of the different conditions that can affect the hoof, and demonstrating the correct way to treat each one appropriately.

2012-lamb-and-ewePerhaps the most rewarding aspect of all has been the instruction on how to manage the breeding flock, including managing the breeding season, optimising ewe nutrition to avoid metabolic diseases in pregnancy, lambing with confidence and rearing strong, healthy lambs!

The DVDs are arranged in a modular format so you can quickly access the information you need, and watch them time and time again.  So whether you’re just getting started or are a seasoned smallholder, whenever you need to learn a new technique, or refresh your memory on a particular aspect of health or flock management, the experts will be on hand to help you!
